Raw Feeding Advice

How Much Raw Food
Should I Feed My Dog?

A simple raw feeding guide to help you work out how much raw food your dog should eat each day based on weight, age, body condition and activity level.

2%–3% Rule

Most adult dogs will eat between 2% and 3% of their body weight per day in raw food.

Adjust as Needed

Feeding amounts should be adjusted based on body condition, age and activity level.

Start Simple

Complete meals are often the easiest and safest way to begin feeding raw confidently.

Finding the right feeding amount

One of the most common questions when starting a raw diet is how much food your dog should eat each day. As a general guide, most adult dogs eat between 2% and 3% of their body weight per day in raw food.

This is a starting point rather than a fixed rule. The right amount will vary depending on your dog’s age, breed, activity level, metabolism and body condition.

If you are just starting out, feeding a complete raw meal makes portioning much easier, as the nutritional balance has already been done for you.

Daily raw feeding guide by weight

This guide gives a simple starting point for adult dogs fed a raw diet.

Dog Weight
Approx. Daily Raw Food Amount
5kg
100g – 150g per day
10kg
200g – 300g per day
15kg
300g – 450g per day
20kg
400g – 600g per day
30kg
600g – 900g per day
40kg
800g – 1.2kg per day

This amount can be fed as one or two meals per day, depending on your dog’s routine and preference.

Feeding puppies raw food

Puppies need more food than adult dogs because they are growing quickly. A common guideline is to feed 5%–10% of body weight per day, reducing gradually as they approach adulthood.

Because puppies grow quickly, it is a good idea to review their feeding amounts regularly and adjust as they develop.

Adjusting for activity level

Highly active dogs

Working dogs and very active dogs may need feeding levels closer to 3% of body weight per day, and sometimes slightly more depending on condition.

Less active or older dogs

Dogs with lower activity levels often do well on feeding amounts closer to 2% of body weight per day.

Tip from our team Use your dog’s body condition as your best guide. Feeding charts are a useful starting point, but they should always be adjusted to suit the individual dog.

Signs you are feeding the right amount

A well-fed dog should have:

  • A visible waist when viewed from above
  • Ribs that can be easily felt but not seen prominently
  • Good energy levels and healthy body condition

If your dog gains weight, reduce the amount slightly. If your dog appears too lean, increase the amount gradually and monitor body condition over time.
